How to create a simple marketing plan for a small business?

When I talk to small business owners about the need to have a “strategy,” I often see their terrified faces. They associate it with months of analysis, corporate jargon, and 40-page documents that no one will ever read. However, the truth is much simpler: a marketing plan for a local business should fit on a single A4 sheet.

Its goal isn’t to impress the board, but to make your daily work easier. A good marketing plan is one that answers the morning question: “What should I do today to attract customers?”. Below you will find 4 steps to create such a document.

Step 1: Set ONE main goal

If you say: “I want to earn more, I want to increase sales, I want to have more followers on FB and rebuild the website,” you will make a mess out of it. There can only be one priority.

Ask yourself: what do you care about the most this quarter?
Do you want to fill up your booking calendar for September?
Do you want to sell more of one specific, high-margin service?
Do you want to gain 5 regular B2B clients on a subscription basis?

When you define a specific and measurable goal, you will discard 80% of marketing activities that do not bring you closer to this goal at all. Suddenly, running a TikTok account may turn out to be completely unnecessary if your goal is to acquire local medical clinics for long-term cooperation.

Step 2: Choose a priority service

Marketers and business owners often make the mistake of excessive fragmentation – they try to forcefully advertise every single service. Such a scatter of budget and attention means that none of the offers break through strongly enough.

Instead of communicating: “We will do everything for you: A, B, C, D and F”, choose one introductory service (the so-called “Trojan horse”) or the most profitable main service, around which you will build the entire campaign. Only when the customer comes to you for this one service and you gain their trust, offer them supplementary packages (the so-called cross-selling).

Simple Marketing Plan: How to build it

Step 3: Choose a maximum of 2 distribution channels

Don’t try to be everywhere. Being present in all possible media will eat up your time and budget. Think about where your customer is when they need your solution:
– Are they actively looking for it? → Focus on Google Ads, SEO and Google My Business optimization.
– Are they inspired by solutions? → Focus on Instagram, Pinterest and high-quality photos.
– Is it a service based on impulse and entertainment? → Launch Facebook ads with very local targeting (geotargeting).

Choose one acquisition channel (e.g., Google) and one relationship-building channel (e.g., company Facebook/blog). And stick to it strictly.

Step 4: Establish a schedule and responsibilities

The best plan will crumble if it is not assigned to specific dates and people. A schedule forces action.
Break goals down into small steps:
Every week: One educational post on social media + asking one customer for a review on Google.
Every two weeks: Adding a new service on the website.
Every month: Optimizing the Google Ads campaign and updating photos on the business profile.

This way, a strategy turns from an abstract concept into a set of simple tasks (so-called checklists) that you can delegate to employees or outsource.

Summary

A simple marketing plan is designed to lift the decision-making paralysis off your shoulders. Having set one goal, chosen a specific service and two key channels, you know exactly what to focus on. And most importantly – you gain resistance to “shiny objects” (a new platform, a new advertising trend) that you don’t need in your business right now.
